The M5 has standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The CT5-V doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the M5. But it costs extra on the CT5-V.

The BMW M5’s optional Surround View offers available integrated front and rear camera washers, ensuring clear, all-weather visibility without the need for manual cleaning. In contrast, the Cadillac CT5-V lacks camera washers, requiring you to manually clean the cameras for optimal performance.

Both the M5 and the CT5-V have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The BMW M5 weighs 1107 to 1549 pounds more than the Cadillac CT5-V. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The M5’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the CT5-V’s (12 vs. 6 years).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the M5 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Cadillac only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the CT5-V.

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the M5 has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the 6.2 supercharged V8 in the CT5-V.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that BMW vehicles are better in initial quality than Cadillac vehicles. With 4 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks BMW higher than Cadillac.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW 13 places higher in reliability than Cadillac.

The M5’s 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 357 more horsepower (717 vs. 360) and 333 lbs.-ft. more torque (738 vs. 405) than the CT5-V’s standard 3.0 turbo V6. The M5’s 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 49 more horsepower (717 vs. 668) and 79 lbs.-ft. more torque (738 vs. 659) than the CT5-V Blackwing’s standard 6.2 supercharged V8.

The M5 Sedan can travel with zero emissions for 29 miles. The CT5-V can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

Regenerative brakes improve the M5’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The CT5-V doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the BMW M5 higher (4 out of 10) than the Cadillac CT5-V (2 to 4). This means the M5 produces up to 15.6 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the CT5-V every 15,000 miles.

For better traction, the M5 has larger tires than the CT5-V (F:285/40R20 & R:295/35R21 vs. 245/40R19).

The M5’s 295/35R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the CT5-V’s standard 40 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the M5 has standard 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the CT5-V. The CT5-V’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the M5’s wheelbase is 2.3 inches longer than on the CT5-V (118.3 inches vs. 116 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the M5 is 3.3 inches wider in the front and 2.3 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the CT5-V.

The front grille of the M5 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The CT5-V doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the M5 Sedan is quieter than the CT5-V Blackwing:

The M5 Sedan has 1.6 inches more front headroom, 6.8 inches more front hip room, 2.5 inches more front shoulder room, 1.5 inches more rear headroom, 5.2 inches more rear hip room and 1.2 inches more rear shoulder room than the CT5-V.

The M5 Sedan has a much larger trunk than the CT5-V (16.5 vs. 11.9 cubic feet).

The M5 has a much larger trunk with its rear seat up than the CT5-V (27.2 vs. 11.9 cubic feet).

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the M5’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The CT5-V doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

With its sedan body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the M5 offers cargo security. The CT5-V’s non-lockable folding seat defeats cargo security.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the M5 has a standard power liftgate, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button or just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, completely leaving your hands free. The CT5-V doesn’t offer a power trunk, so its trunk has to be closed manually.

If the windows are left open on the M5 the driver can close all of them at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the CT5-V can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

A power rear sunshade is optional in the M5 Sedan and manual rear side window sunshades are optional in the M5 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The CT5-V doesn’t offer a rear or rear side window sunshades.

The BMW M5 has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors costs extra on the CT5-V.

Both the M5 and the CT5-V have standard heated front seats. The M5 also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the CT5-V.

The BMW M5 comes in sedan and station wagon bodystyles; the Cadillac CT5-V isn’t available as a station wagon.
