The M3 has standard Active Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The CT5-V doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The M3 has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The CT5-V doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the M3 and the CT5-V have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The M3’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the CT5-V’s (12 vs. 6 years).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the M3 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Cadillac only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the CT5-V.

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the engines in the M3 have an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the 6.2 supercharged V8 in the CT5-V.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that BMW vehicles are better in initial quality than Cadillac vehicles. With 4 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks BMW higher than Cadillac.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW 13 places higher in reliability than Cadillac.

As tested in Car and Driver the M3 Competition is faster than the CT5-V Blackwing 6.2 supercharged V8 (automatics tested):

Motor Trend magazine performs a classic 0 to 100 MPH and back to 0 MPH performance test. The BMW M3 Competition completed this feat in only 11.3 seconds. It took the Cadillac CT5-V 15.9 seconds.

On the EPA test cycle the M3 gets better mileage than the CT5-V:

Regardless of its engine, the M3’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The CT5-V Blackwing doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the BMW M3 higher (4 out of 10) than the Cadillac CT5-V (2 to 4). This means the M3 produces up to 15.6 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the CT5-V every 15,000 miles.

For better traction, the M3 has larger tires than the CT5-V (F:275/40R18 & R:285/35R19 vs. 245/40R19).

The M3’s standard 285/35R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the CT5-V’s standard 40 series tires.

The M3 Competition handles at 1.03 G’s, while the CT5-V pulls only .96 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The M3 Competition executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.1 seconds quicker than the CT5-V (23.8 seconds @ .85 average G’s vs. 24.9 seconds @ .76 average G’s).

The BMW M3 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 300 pounds less than the Cadillac CT5-V.

The M3 is 4.7 inches shorter than the CT5-V, making the M3 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the M3 Competition is quieter than the CT5-V Blackwing:

The M3 has 1.6 inches more front headroom, 3.8 inches more front hip room, 1.2 inches more rear headroom and 3.6 inches more rear hip room than the CT5-V.

The M3 has a much larger trunk than the CT5-V (16.9 vs. 11.9 cubic feet).

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the M3’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The CT5-V doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

With its sedan body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the M3 offers cargo security. The CT5-V’s non-lockable folding seat defeats cargo security.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the M3 has a standard power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The CT5-V doesn’t offer a power trunk, so its trunk has to be closed manually.

If the windows are left open on the M3 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the CT5-V can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Laser headlights, optional on the M3, produce their light by firing blue lasers through phosphorus, a process that uses one-half the power of the CT5-V’s LED headlights. Laser headlights can have double the range of LEDs with a much smaller surface area.

The BMW M3 has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors costs extra on the CT5-V.

Both the M3 and the CT5-V have standard heated front seats. The M3 also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the CT5-V.

The BMW 3 Series outsold the Cadillac CT5 by over two to one during 2024.
