The XM’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Lyriq doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The XM has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the XM. But it costs extra on the Lyriq.

Both the XM and the Lyriq have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

The XM’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the Lyriq’s (12 vs. 6 years).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the XM for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Cadillac only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Lyriq.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW 7 places higher in reliability than Cadillac.

The XM’s standard 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 279 more horsepower (644 vs. 365) and 265 lbs.-ft. more torque (590 vs. 325) than the Lyriq’s standard electric motor. The XM’s 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 129 more horsepower (644 vs. 515) and 140 lbs.-ft. more torque (590 vs. 450) than the Lyriq’s optional electric motors. The XM Label Red’s standard 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 223 more horsepower (738 vs. 515) and 288 lbs.-ft. more torque (738 vs. 450) than the Lyriq’s optional electric motors.

As tested in Car and Driver the BMW XM (base engine) is faster than the Cadillac Lyriq:

The XM’s maximum EPA estimated range on a full tank and a full charge is 340 miles, after which it can be refueled at any gas station in minutes. The Lyriq’s range is only 303 to 326 miles, after which the minimum time to recharge is 10 minutes for only a 25% charge at a specially configured quick charge station not available in most areas. A full recharge at a professionally installed 220-volt charging station can take up to 6 hours and 30 minutes.

The XM has a standard locking fuel door and a locking charge port with a power remote release convenient to the driver and which locks and unlocks with the power locks, respectively. The Lyriq doesn’t have a locking charge port. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and a locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

The XM’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Lyriq doesn’t offer launch control.

For better traction, the XM has larger tires than the Lyriq (F:275/35R23 & R:315/30R23 vs. 265/50R20).

The XM’s standard 275/40R22 front and 315/35R22 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Lyriq’s standard 50 series tires. The XM’s 275/35R23 front and 315/30R23 rear tires have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile than the Lyriq’s optional 40 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XM has standard 22-inch wheels. Smaller 20-inch wheels are standard on the Lyriq. The XM’s 23-inch wheels are larger than the 22-inch wheels optional on the Lyriq.

The XM has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Lyriq doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The rear suspension of the XM uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Lyriq, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The XM offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Cadillac doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Lyriq.

The XM has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Lyriq’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the XM is 2.1 inches wider in the front and .6 inches wider in the rear than on the Lyriq.

The XM handles at .92 G’s, while the Lyriq pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The XM Label Red executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.5 seconds quicker than the Lyriq Luxury AWD (23.9 seconds @ .84 average G’s vs. 26.4 seconds @ .71 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the XM has a 1.7 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Lyriq (8.7 vs. 7 inches), allowing the XM to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The XM has 1.8 inches more front headroom, 1.4 inches more front shoulder room, 1.1 inches more rear headroom and .7 inches more rear legroom than the Lyriq.

The XM has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Lyriq with its rear seat folded (64.3 vs. 60.8 cubic feet).

A Condition-Based Service Display is standard on the XM to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for oil changes, brake fluid replacement, and vehicle inspections, based on actual driving conditions. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Cadillac doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Lyriq.

The XM has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, warning, navigation instruction and driver assistance information readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

If the windows are left open on the XM the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Lyriq can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the XM to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Lyriq doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the XM has a standard rear wiper. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The Lyriq’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The XM’s standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.
